It’s nearly 11 a.m. on a Monday morning and she’s busy preparing two dairy-free cups in her spacious kitchen. The singer is in full mom-mode: Pancakes and eggs are also being whipped up and kisses are planted on the forehead of her youngest son, Genesis, 6, who sits at the counter next to his grandma, Keys’ mother, Terria. The kids—Keys’ son Egypt is occupying himself elsewhere in the house—don’t have school due to a teacher development day, so everyone is easing into the morning. This exhibition celebrates the career and legacy of Black fashion designer Patrick Kelly (1954–1990). First presented by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2014, the exhibition presents seventy-nine fully accessorized ensembles, dating from 1984 to 1990, from the Philadelphia Museum’s archive of Kelly’s work, to new acquisitions from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s costume collection. Kelly drew upon his childhood in the United States South, his African American heritage, his experiences in the club and gay cultural scenes in New York and Paris, and muses from fashion, art, and Black history to create light-hearted yet sophisticated designs that pushed racial and cultural boundaries.

(WWD) September 25, 2021 Ahead of a Faith Ringgold retrospective due to open at the New Museum in February, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. has acquired a painting from the artist’s famed “American People Series.” Titled The American People Series #18: The Flag is Bleeding (1967), the painting was gifted to the museum by the Glenstone Foundation, which was formed by ARTnews Top 200 Collectors Emily and Mitchell Rales. (Mitchell is the president of the National Gallery’s board.) It is the first painting by Ringgold to enter the museum’s collection. Read More

(Reuters) November 23, 2021 - Rapper Jay-Z rose to the top of the list of artists with the most Grammy nominations on Tuesday, hitting a lifetime total of 83 that put him just ahead of former Beatle Paul McCartney. The three latest nominations for Jay-Z came for collaborations with other artists. He made guest appearances on DMX song "Bath Salts" and Kanye West's "Jail," which also earned Jay-Z a nod for West's album "Donda."
Jay-Z has won 23 Grammys overall, including a best rap album award in 1999 and honors for songs "Crazy in Love" with his wife, Beyonce, in 2004 and "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys in 2011.

The Grammy Awards have launched a different procedure for selecting their nominees this year — going with a popular vote and eliminating the controversial “secret committees” that had curated the final lists in recent decades — and although most of the top nominees were expected when the contenders were announced Tuesday, the top one definitely was not.
Jon Batiste — veteran jazz keyboardist, musical director of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and a member of one of New Orleans’ legendary musical dynasties — leads the nominees with 11, mostly for his “We Are” album, but also for his “Soul” film score. While “We Are” peaked at just No. 86 on the Billboard 200, its huge number of nominations speak to its multi-genre appeal, his familiarity to Academy voters via “Colbert” (and a cosign from Grammy legend Quincy Jones), and most of all his musicianship.
Designer Virgil Abloh dies after Private Battle with Cancer

American fashion designer, famous for becoming the first African American man to become the artistic director of a French fashion house when he took over at Louis Vuitton, has died at the age of 41. “For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments,
all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.
“Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. A true fashion icon he will be missed.
Alber Elbaz Tribute Show To Get Museum Treatment

(WWD) November 24, 2021 PARIS — The AZ Factory “Love Brings Love” tribute show was a night to celebrate Alber Elbaz and his contribution to fashion. After the tribute show, a majority of the homage designs were donated to AZ Factory, the fashion venture the late designer had created with Compagnie Financière Richemont.
Next spring, an eponymous exhibition will offer another opportunity to see the designs created in his honor by re-creating the runway experience at Paris’ Palais Galliera Fashion Museum from
March 5 to July 10. Around 45 of the silhouettes from the Oct. 5 show — including the first exit signed by the late designer, those from designers and heritage brands as well as two of the 25 looks created by his AZ Factory studio team — will take pride of place on the ground floor’s Salon d’Honneur and Grande Galerie. (WWD) November 24, 2021 LONDON — WoolMark has a new cohort of finalists for the 2022 prize, seven brands from six countries that will compete for the international accolade that comes with 200,000 Australian dollars, or $144,000.
The finalist designers and brands are Ahluwalia and Saul Nash from the U.K.; Egonlab (France); Jordan Dalah (Australia); Mmusomaxwell (South Africa); Peter Do (U.S.), and Rui (China). “Our aim is to support designers to think beyond today, highlighting the innovation, versatility and sustainability of Merino wool, and to showcase its basis for new technologies to meet the needs of tomorrow’s customer,” said John Roberts, chief executive officer of Australian Wool Innovation, the parent company of The Woolmark Company.
