Photographer Campbell Addy on Diversity, His Artistic Process, and His Stunning New Book

Photo: Campbell Addy

Vogue June 1, 2022  "Subconsciously, the underlying messages in my work have always been a product of an industry that I often didn’t feel seen in. I wanted to create a book that encapsulated finally feeling content in myself, knowing that if I don’t see myself in certain areas, I can create those spaces. I got into photography off a book off the shelf, so I hope that there’ll be a little me somewhere picking up this book and understanding that we’re all beautiful. I wonder, if I’d seen a book like this when I was 16, how different my work or journey would have been." Why Campbell named the book Feeling Seen Read More

White and Black: A Historian Traces African American Influences in the United States

Schomburg Collection

NYT June 1, 2022 During more than half a century as a professor and a scholar, David Hackett Fischer has published 11 books, received multiple awards for his teaching and won a Pulitzer Prize. Now he has delivered the long-promised “companion volume” to “Albion’s Seed,” a work that appeared in 1989 to both acclaim and searing criticism. (Fischer noted ruefully that one forum assembled to discuss it was “closer to the sort of thing that happened in the Colosseum.”) In that sweeping study, he had traced the nation’s roots to four colonial-era British migrations that, he argued, continued to shape American culture and politics into the late 20th century.“

African Founders: How Enslaved People Expanded American Ideals” has much in common with its predecessor. Like “Albion’s Seed,” it is more than 900 pages long, encompassing an almost unimaginable breadth of research, information and ambition. “African Founders” employs the same framework of analysis in its focus on migrations to specific regions, which Fischer believes came to define American culture in the centuries to follow.  Read More

A Film Within A Film, ‘Lux Æterna’ Is A Horrific Trip

Image: Yellow Veil Pictures

The Village Voice May 12, 2022 From the outset, director Gaspar Noé prepares his audience for a meditation on the agonies of art-making.  Movies about filmmaking seem to have a built-in spiritual dimension, as if the instinct to create art is in fact a quest comparable to Galahad’s search for the sacred grail. So it is with Gaspar Noé’s Lux Æterna, a 51-minute feature about a French film shoot that goes horribly—albeit photogenically—awry. The film was funded by Yves Saint Laurent and premiered at Cannes in 2019 as part of their midnight program.

Lauren Halsey Brings Her Vision of South Central Los Angeles to New York

“I can just keep going,” Halsey said of her installations and sculptures, which often reference her South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. “I can keep adding layers.” Photo Credit:Naima Green for The New York Times

NYT May 7, 2022 Through her installations Halsey is honoring the community that nurtured and inspired her — not only her mother, a teacher, or her father, an accountant, but the church, the convenience stores, her bus route, her relatives and community centers. She is also documenting a particular segment of society, elevating an urban vernacular that often gets devalued or ignored.  At a time when many Black artists are being recognized for figurative art, Halsey has been making large-scale sculptures and reliefs. And while her installations may allude to economic hardship, gentrification or gang violence, they convey an explosive sense of joy. Learn More About the Artist
