Inside the fabulous Dior couture world of ‘Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris’
nypost.com--July 25, 2022 This summer’s most romantic movie is about a woman who falls in love … with a dress.
In “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” out Friday, a plucky, kind-hearted cleaning lady (Harris, played by Lesley Manville) working in 1950s London discovers a Christian Dior gown in a wealthy employer’s closet. The strapless lavender frock, festooned with glittering embroidered flowers and lace trimmings, propels Harris on a quest for her own couture confection, leading her all the way to France and Dior’s hallowed maison.
The film’s costume designer Jenny Beavan told The Post that Harris’ rapturous response isn’t actually that far-fetched, historically speaking.
“For [many] women, it was just fantastic at the end of [World War II] to see clothes that had such volume in fabric, after everybody had been scrimping on rations,” said Beavan, a three-time Oscar winner.

Since 2021, the house of Jean-Paul Gaultier has chosen a guest designer to put their spin on the provocateur’s signature style. This season, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing took the reins after a much-lauded outing in January from Y/Project designer Glenn Martens. When the first model in Rousteing’s Fall 2022 Couture show walked out—a male model wearing striped patchwork and silver face jewelry—the audience erupted in echoing cheers. WWD June 1, 2022 The late Virgil Abloh was famously prolific, and nine unseen looks from his last collection for Louis Vuitton will soon be unveiled in Bangkok. On Tuesday, Vuitton announced that it will stage a “spin-off show” in Thailand’s capital on June 1 at 7:30 p.m. eastern time. It is to be livestreamed on the brand’s website. The nine never-before-seen looks from the original fall 2022 collection are said to explore three ideas — “the coming-of-age premise, the global perspective and the cycle of creativity” — through “circular motifs.” The original collection was 95 percent completed by the time of Abloh’s unexpected death from cancer last November at the age of 41, and carried all his signatures, with a strong romantic undertone. But when it came to Samella Lewis, it was true. Lewis was an artist, an activist, a historian, an author, a curator, a professor, a gallerist, a collector and a beloved mentor who helped document and elevate work by Black artists for almost eight decades. A down-to-earth yet steely woman who helped integrate Black artists into the American canon, Lewis died of renal failure on Friday at a hospice in Torrance. She was 99. RIP

Now he has delivered the long-promised “companion volume” to “Albion’s Seed,” a work that appeared in 1989 to both acclaim and searing criticism. NYT May 6, 2022. In the very first pages of “Anna,” a semi-authorized biography of the Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the protagonist cries. It is Nov. 9, 2016, the morning after her erstwhile pal Donald J. Trump was elected to the presidency, and Wintour is speaking at a hastily arranged all-staff meeting. In the course of inveighing against a Women’s Wear Daily article that accused her of going too far in her support for Hillary Clinton, she cracks. This sort of peek into the soul that inhabits the iconic bob and sunglasses is what the book promises. On the cover, Wintour smirks from behind her armor, her arms crossed defiantly, as if challenging the reader to pierce the veil. The author, Amy Odell, tries valiantly. Read more
