December 20, 2021, When is a fashion or beauty image art? Cath Pound explores the remarkable work of the legendary artist whose ‘strangeness’ raised the status of the medium. The name Man Ray springs instantly to mind when considering the most innovative photographers of the 20th Century. His rediscovery of the techniques of Solarisation and Rayography and his inventive use of close cropping resulted in some of the most iconic images ever produced in the medium. But it is often forgotten that for two decades he worked almost exclusively as a fashion photographer. Although dismissive of this work, which he saw primarily as a way to fund other artistic endeavours, his ground-breaking compositions for the likes of Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar transformed a previously staid and rigid format into an artform – and produced images that, removed from their original context, have become legendary Read More

(The Cut/ Photo by by Rahim Fortune and Styling by Jessica Willis) December 20, 2021. For Gen Z, upcycled, reclaimed fashion is opening up a new sense of individuality and self-expression, while helping to save the planet, writes Bel Jacobs. Few followers of fashion will forget the moment Kate Moss arrived at a New York fashion week dinner, perfect in a pale-yellow dress, worn off-the-shoulder, by 1950s French couturier Jean Dessès. Vintage was great and all that, we thought – but readymade was so much easier. Read More

In the 1990s, JNCO jeans were big—in every sense of the term. With hulking legs (imagine fitting a 2-liter bottle of Coke horizontally across the hem), JNCOs were the street-sweeping denims that raver kids, graffiti artists, skateboarders and those pretending to be part of those subcultures wore. They represented a generational divide, tut-tutted by straight-leg Lee-wearing dads and even banned by some school districts who considered them unsightly.

WARDROBE.NYC and Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP) are two brands that give their wearers carte blanche. Both share a vision for pared down, functional designs meant to be accented by an individual’s personal taste; so, naturally, the two collaborated on a collection for winter 2021 that marries utility with fashion.
